On July 13th, Lida Group, one of the leading Chinese construction material manufacturers, held a groundbreaking ceremony for its new steel structure production facility in Hangzhou High-tech Industrial Development Zone. The new factory is expected to be completed within 18 months at a total investment of RMB 2 billion.

Ziwen Mu, chairman of Lida Group, delivered a speech at the ceremony to mark the start of construction. He said the new plant will focus on mass producing prefabricated modular building components including structural frames, wall panels, floor decks etc. through advanced automated production lines. These components will then be transported and assembled on construction sites to form high-rise apartment buildings.

Compared with traditional construction methods, modular building can significantly improve construction efficiency. By manufacturing standardized modular units in a factory setting, processes like material cutting, welding and finishing can be conducted concurrently in assembly lines, achieving much higher productivity. The completed modules will also experience strict quality control before leaving the factory.

On sites, modular construction allows building modules to be lifted and installed like giant “lego blocks”, forming the building’s structure and envelope much faster than brick-by-brick approaches. It is estimated the new method could reduce on-site construction time by 30% or more.

The plant will adopt the latest German robotic welding and automated manufacturing technologies to ensure production quality and efficiency. Annual production capacity is expected to reach 100,000 modular units after full completion to support the booming demand of high-rise residential properties in East China region.

Modular building has gained increasing popularity globally in recent years due to its advantages. Many construction firms have turned to off-site prefabrication to improve construction speed and quality. Statistics show, the modular construction market has maintained double-digit growth and is predicted to exceed $140 billion by 2027.

In China, rapid urbanization has driven massive housing development especially for middle-income group. As a result, construction companies are under huge pressure for fast yet quality delivery. Modularized, factory-produced components allow more streamlined assembly and handover of properties to homeowners.

Lida Group, as a pioneer of modular construction in China, has accumulated over 10 years of experience in designing, manufacturing and installing modular steel structures. The new plant will help further expand the company’s production capacity and better serve the booming Chinese property market. It demonstrates Lida’s strong confidence and commitment to the continued prosperity of modular construction industry.

The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by over 200 guests including government officials, investors and construction industry leaders. In his closing speech, Ziwen Mu expressed gratitude for the support and looks forward to applying modular innovations to build a higher quality and more sustainable living environment for the Chinese people.
