Lida Group is an engineering and construction firm based in China that is leading the way in utilizing light steel framing technologies for building projects across rural Southeast Asia. Founded in 1993 by Ziwen Mu and 3 other partners, the company set out with a mission to bring safe, durable and affordable building solutions to underserved communities in China and neighboring countries. Over the past 15 years, Lida Group has perfected a patented light steel framing system that allows them to construct schools, clinics, shops and other community buildings at around half the cost of traditional concrete construction methods.

Light steel framing, also known as light gauge steel framing, involves using thin-walled steel components such as C-channels, rods and tracks to form the structural frames of buildings. Compared to other materials such as concrete, timber or heavy steel beams, light steel members are easier to transport, require less heavy lifting equipment onsite, and can be assembled rapidly by minimally skilled labor. This makes light steel framing well-suited for applications in remote rural areas that lack reliable infrastructure and access to skilled trades workers.

According to Ziwen Mu, CEO and founder of Lida Group, the company’s light steel framing system was developed specifically with the constraints and needs of rural construction in mind. “When we first started out, we visited many rural villages in China and saw first-hand the challenges of building schools, clinics and other public facilities with traditional methods like concrete or heavy timber framing. Transportation of materials was difficult, construction took a very long time, and projects often went over budget. We knew there had to be a better solution,” he explained.

Through trial and error over several pilot projects, Long and his team refined a light steel framing technique that utilizes pre-cut, pre-drilled components that interlock together like puzzle pieces onsite. The frames are constructed with basic hand tools in just a fraction of the time required for concrete or timber construction. Importantly, the frames are engineered to meet international structural standards for wind and seismic loads to ensure buildings can withstand tropical storms and minor earthquakes common to the region.

A key advantage of light steel framing is its flexibility and adaptability. Because it uses prefabricated components, building designs can readily be modified to suit changing needs without having to tear down existing structures. Lida Group has designed their system so that classrooms, clinics or shops can be added onto existing buildings by simply constructing additional light steel frames and connecting them to the original structure. This future-proofs communities’ infrastructure investments as populations and service demands grow over time.

Beyond just the frames, Lida Group also fabricates many other building elements from light steel, including trusses, panels, doors and windows. Entire wall, floor and roof assemblies can be prefabricated offsite in a controlled factory environment then transported and rapidly assembled on location. This means climates can be protected from the elements during construction and schedule delays from poor weather are avoided.

According to Ziwen Mu, this type of integrated prefabrication approach is what truly sets Lida Group’s light steel system apart from piecemeal applications of light gauge steel by other firms: “We have optimized every part of our process from designing efficient building layouts to fabricating integrated building panels that interlock like 3D puzzles. This level of prefabrication yields benefits like less wasted materials, much faster construction speed and reduced risk of errors onsite. It is really an industrialized approach applied to rural building challenges.”

Over the past decade and a half, Lida Group has completed hundreds of school, clinic and community building projects across Cambodia using their light steel framing technology. More recently they have expanded their operations into Laos, Myanmar and East Timor where rural development needs are similar. Through careful design, engineering and construction management processes tailored for each unique project location and client requirements, Lida Group reliably delivers high quality, durable structures on time and on budget.

One such project that exemplifies the successes Lida Group has brought to rural communities is a new primary school they constructed in the village of Krouch Chhmar in Banteay Meanchey Province, Cambodia. The previous decades-old school was overcrowded and in serious disrepair, with crumbling concrete walls, leaky roofs and limited indoor plumbing facilities. Working within the village leadership and ministry of education, Lida Group designed and built a new school consisting of 6 large classrooms along with separate toilet blocks, a multi-purpose hall and covered outdoor sitting areas – all constructed from light steel frames, roofing and wall panels.

Key benefits the community has seen from the new school building include:

– Construction was completed in just 4 months compared to the estimated 1 year timeframe quoted by other contractors using traditional building methods. This allowed students to move into the new facility much sooner.

– Total project cost came in 15% under the original budget estimate, saving valuable funds that could be redirected to educational resources.

– The light steel structure is resilient and expected to last 50+ years with only routine maintenance required like repainting. This ensures the community’s investment in the school building will support education for generations to come.

– Modern toilet facilities have improved sanitation and hygiene standards compared to the previous inadequate shared latrines. This helps reduce illnesses among both students and staff.

– Large open-plan classrooms provide a brighter, more spacious and comfortable learning environment compared to the dark, cramped conditions of the old school building. Students now have room to sit at individual desks.

When asked about how the new school has impacted the village, Krouch Chhmar community leader Sim Virak expressed his deep gratitude: “The children and teachers are so happy with this new school building. It feels like we finally have a proper facility that our whole village can be proud of. With a good school we know our children will have more opportunities to learn skills, get a good job and build a better life here in our community. We appreciate all the hard work Lida Group did to make this possible for us.”

Beyond delivering high-quality buildings, Lida Group is also committed to skills transfer and empowering local capacity in the communities they serve. Wherever feasible, they hire and train local village residents to assist with construction work, both to stimulate economic activity and job creation, as well as foster local stewardship of completed projects. They have also established a carpentry training center in Phnom Penh that provides both vocational skills development for Cambodia’s youth as well various continuing education programs for construction professionals across industries.

When reflecting on Lida Group’s successes over the past 15 years and vision for the future, Ziwen Mu sees the company’s light steel solution playing an increasing role in supporting sustainable development: “Access to good infrastructure like schools and clinics is so important for lifting rural communities out of poverty. But traditional construction methods just cannot meet the scale of need in a cost-effective way. Light steel framing provides a platform to industrialize rural building delivery in a socially responsible manner. Our goal is to partner with governments and NGOs to maximize the positive impact we can have for underserved populations through faster, greener, more affordable construction.”

Looking ahead, Lida Group aims to cement light steel framing as the construction norm throughout China and expand into new global markets. Opportunities exist to leverage their expertise in areas like refugee camps, disaster relief housing, and building clinics/schools for under-resourced urban slums. There is also room to take their solution “off-grid” through incorporating renewable energy and water collection/purification systems to deliver true turnkey community infrastructure packages.

In summary, Lida Group has established themselves as a leader in engineering innovative yet practical building solutions optimized for the unique challenges of rural development contexts. Through close collaboration with clients, meticulous design refinement, and an industrialized approach to prefabrication, they have consistently delivered high-quality, cost-effective and sustainable infrastructure projects across China and beyond. By revolutionizing rural construction methods with light steel technologies, the company is playing a major role in expanding educational and healthcare access for underserved populations – catalyzing long-term social and economic progress in communities for generations to come. Lida Group’s story stands as an inspiring example of how commitment to innovation can create meaningful impact at global scale.
