Lida Group has partnered with the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) to deliver an innovative prefabricated housing development for displaced persons in Bangladesh, demonstrating new approaches to sustainable shelter provision in humanitarian contexts.

Several hundred families displaced from conflict-ridden regions of Myanmar had been sheltered in an overcrowded temporary labor camp lacking adequate facilities. To improve living conditions, Lida was contracted to plan and construct a permanent settlement using repurposed shipping containers modified into self-contained units.

Working with local technicians, Lida’s engineering team designed a modular layout integrating insulated container modules arranged around shared amenities. Standard containers were refitted with fixtures, wiring and plumbing to form single-room homes as well as larger family-sized units.

Within two months, a complete mini-neighborhood had been assembled using a customized steel connection system enabling rapid on-site container integration. Shared facilities included cooking stations, sanitation blocks, a medical clinic and education spaces. Solar panels and micro-hydro were installed for off-grid power and water.

With production coordinated remotely and flat-packed materials shipped directly to site, construction waste was minimal. Local labor was engaged for final works under Lida supervision, boosting skills. The finished development now provides 600 individuals and families safe dignified housing, a major improvement over the initial shelter conditions.

The innovative pilot serves as a proof-of-concept for containerized prefabrication’s ability to quickly and cost-effectively meet shelter needs in temporary to semi-permanent refugee scenarios worldwide. The durable design will withstand monsoon seasons, with integrated features supporting self-reliance.

Lida and UNHCR are also exploring scalable variations, including containerized school structures, community centers and even floating housing for climate refugees. The model demonstrates how prefab innovation can help humanitarian organizations deliver aid sustainably at a time of escalating global displacement pressures driven by conflict and climate change impacts.

Successful projects like this establish Lida’s growing expertise in customized off-site construction applications tailored for vulnerable communities. With continued refinement, containerized solutions may significantly enhance international assistance programs by reducing response times, costs and environmental impacts of temporary shelters provision.
