Lida Group is a pioneer in sustainable container housing solutions in China, using converted shipping containers to create a double-layer flat-pack container building.

Containers traditionally used to transport goods are now being repurposed as building blocks for environmentally friendly buildings. Compared with traditional buildings, container structures have the advantages of reducing material waste, shortening construction time, reducing costs and reducing carbon footprints.

Lida Group focuses on transforming recycled containers into customizable buildings, such as container stores, container offices, container showrooms and container homes. The firm’s experienced team of contractors and engineers modify and join the container modules to form fully integrated buildings.

The Lida Group Flat Pack Container Building is one such container house project that demonstrates the versatility of flat pack container buildings. The double-storey structure was assembled entirely from flat-packed steel containers that arrived at the construction site.

For this project, Lida Group procured 12 second-hand 40-foot containers. Containers are cleaned, inspected for structural integrity and coated with a protective coating.

Next, the container is cut into flat panels and the edges are reinforced with steel plates. Roof panels were also cut from the ends of used shipping containers.

The flat-packed containers are then transported to the construction site, where they are reassembled into two storeys. The container panels are firmly joined together using special brackets and connectors.

Once the container frame is erected, common building services such as wiring, plumbing, air conditioning and lighting are installed. The double flat pack container building is completed with exterior finishes such as paint coatings and cladding.

Flat pack container construction has several benefits over traditional assembled container construction:

First, shipping containers on flatbeds can significantly reduce shipping costs. The compact footprint of the slab also allows for easy truck transport to the job site.

Second, flat-pack containers are quicker and easier to assemble because they just have to fit together like a puzzle. This shortens the construction phase considerably.

Third, the slabs offer more design freedom because they can be arranged in a variety of layouts before being connected. This results in a more customized end product.

Fourth, flat panels are lighter and more manageable than fully assembled shipping containers. This makes handling and installation on site easier and safer.

Fifth, less specialized equipment is required to join flat container plates. Traditional container assembly often requires specialized tools and machinery.

In conclusion, the Lida Group Flat Pack Container Building demonstrates an innovative approach to building container houses and modular structures using flat pack containers.

Projects with non-standard layouts and configurations can be easily implemented by taking advantage of the flat design flexibility. When combined with the sustainability, durability and cost-effectiveness of container construction, flat container construction has the potential to disrupt the construction industry broadly. With more creative applications, shipping containers may truly become the Lego bricks of sustainable and affordable construction in the future.
