Shipping containers, or containers as they are commonly called, have traditionally been used to transport goods by ship, rail and truck. In recent years, however, shipping containers have been repurposed as economical and sustainable building blocks for various types of container houses and modular structures.

Lida Group, one of China’s leading container house contractors, sees the potential of shipping containers as a building material. The company uses refurbished dry cargo containers that meet internatiModern Luxury 20FT Mobile Fold Steel Structure Standard Modular Expandable Living Office Sandwich Panel Portable Prefab Prefabricated Shipping Container Houseonal construction standards. These containers are then modified and combined into different configurations to create modular structures such as container offices, container showrooms, container stores and container houses.

The Lida Group Container Office Building is an example of this type of bespoke double-storey container building, which integrates workspaces, meeting rooms and communal areas within its 12 containers.

The 12 refurbished containers used in the project weighed 6.5 to 7.5 tons each and were 40 feet long. The container was inspected, cleaned and treated by Lida Group’s experienced project team and contractors in preparation for its use as an office structure. The containers are then placed and stacked on top of the concrete slab foundation. Special connecting brackets and materials are used to firmly connect the containers together and transform them into a complex building.

The openings of the containers were modified to create windows, doors and ventilation points. Facilities such as air conditioners, wires, pipes, lighting equipment, floors and ceilings are installed in the container. Exterior finishes such as paint coats, cladding, and signage are then applied to complete the container office building. The end result is an attractive and functional modular office space built from recycled materials.

The biggest advantages of container office buildings like the Lida Group project are sustainability, cost-effectiveness, durability and flexibility.

First, shipping containers are already products made using recycled steel in their construction. As a result, container buildings themselves have a lower environmental footprint compared to traditional structures built using virgin materials.

Second, repurposing old containers for new purposes supports a circular economy by preventing them from piling up in scrap yards and landfills.

Third, compared with concrete buildings, container buildings require less building materials, shorten construction time, and reduce costs. It is estimated that the use of shipping containers can reduce construction costs by as much as 50%.

Fourth, containers are strong enough to withstand impact, corrosion, and extreme weather conditions. When properly connected and reinforced, container structures can last for decades with minimal maintenance.

Finally, the modular nature of container design allows container buildings to be reconfigured or expanded with relative ease. When needed, additional container houses and spaces can be added to the existing structure. This kind of scalability and flexibility is difficult to achieve with traditional structures.

All in all, the Lida Group Container Office Building demonstrates how the transformation of used shipping containers into container houses and modular structures can result in environmentally friendly, cost-effective and adaptable structures, changing the container industry and revolutionizing the way we build Way. As more modular container projects are completed, containers have the potential to become the Lego bricks of the construction world.
