Specifying Galvanized or Weathering Steel for Outdoor Structures

When designing steel structures for exterior applications, material selection impacts long-term durability in corrosive environments. Galvanizing and weathering (also called COR-TEN) steel are two common options that require careful specification.

Galvanizing involves bonding a zinc coating to structural steel members through hot-dip galvanizing or metal spraying. The zinc forms a sacrificial barrier that protects the base metal from corrosion for decades in the most severe conditions.

Hot-dip galvanizing provides optimal protection through an average coating thickness greater than 4 mils applied as the steel is passed through a molten zinc bath. This metallurgically bonds zinc to steel and forms a corrosion-resistant interface.

Metal spraying achieves a thinner coating through flame, arc or wire processes. While satisfactory for indoor-only use, the coating lacks the impermeability of hot-dip for truly exterior exposure. It requires more frequent inspection and repair.

 

 

Proper steel surface prep through abrasive blasting removes oxides before galvanizing for void-free adhesion. Strict QC ensures steel cleanliness and immersion times deliver corrosion warranty requirements.

Weathering steel contains carefully controlled alloys like copper that form a protective rusted patina when exposed to outdoor elements. It avoids maintenance costs but takes on a specific appearance rather than staying bright like galvanized.

Initial weeps and staining require establishing finished textures beyond commercial standards before taking on an attractive appearance. Structures may need to weather for up to 18 months before finishing touches.

Humidity, pollution and other environmental factors impact how fast the oxide layer forms, so finishes stabilize later in some climates. Damage exposes raw areas vulnerable to additional corrosion until blackening again.

 

 

Both galvanizing and weathering steel standards outline chemical composition and fabrication requirements. Proper specification is vital for their guaranteed rated lifecycles in specific atmospheric corrosion categories.

In the end, both galvanizing and weathering steels deliver durable, low-maintenance solutions if specified correctly and given time to fully develop their protective barrier in the elements. Careful consideration of project location, aesthetics and lifecycle costs guides the optimal choice.
