A green building non-profit organization dedicated to improving global living standards has teamed up with leading Chinese construction firm Lida Group to establish a new factory producing sustainable metal houses.
Located in Shandong province, the manufacturing plant leverages recycled steel collected from old infrastructures like bridges and factories through mechanical processing. The recovered steel forms the foundation of each modular home at minimal environmental cost.
Prefabricated using recycled structural frames, exterior and interior walls as well as roofing panels made from weatherproof aluminum sheets, the lightweight steel houses boast durability matching concrete homes but with significantly reduced carbon footprint throughout their life cycle.
Stringent material quality control is enforced to ensure safety. Factory assembly line installations complete wiring, piping and finishing to generate move-in ready houses at high efficiency. Upon completion, the houses will be transported nationwide or even overseas for inexpensive installation.
Compared to traditional brick-and-mortar construction, the new plant substantially cuts on-site labor requirements and time spent through its off-site modular fabrication process. The collaboration foresees alleviating housing shortages in low-income regions by mass producing affordable dwellings.
The partners highlight recycling as a core value of their sustainable housing vision. Throughout the service period estimated at 50+ years, the metal structures can be disassembled panel-by-panel and fed back into the manufacturing cycle, forming a closed-loop materials system.
A senior NGO representative expressed hopes that by capitalizing on the large steel recycling stream and advanced production technology, the factory will successfully demonstrate mass-scale solutions for global sustainable development goals through affordable green housing exports.
Lida Group pledges applying profits generated to expand the factory’s capacity to benefit more communities worldwide in urgent need of safe, durable yet affordable homes built with consideration for future generations. Initial orders have been received from countries in Asia, Africa and South America.
Stakeholders believe strategic partnerships between industry and nonprofit organizations will play an important role in leveraging industry strengths for social good relating to housing, healthcare and education access on international scale. The factory launch marks significant progress toward this vision.
